Victrix Spartan Hoplites

Here are a few photos of a unit of the Victrix Spartan hoplites which I've just finished. These are similar to the Athenian set with the same basic torso but have different heads and are suitably bearded with long hair and pilos helmets. The trickiest thing putting these together is ensuring a good fit between the front half of the head and the back half of long hair.  There is a handy diagram in the box which shows which parts fit together. All the figures are armoured and I'm hoping that Vicrix will release some unarmoured hoplites at some stage.

According to Nick Sekunda in The Spartan Army Osprey book (p.28):
At some point during the 5th century, possibly c.450-425 the Lakedaimonian army decided to discard their cuirasses. Behind this move seems to have been a search for battlefield mobility as well as the need for rapid marching on campaign. In due course other Greek armies followed the Lakedaimonian lead and abandoned their heavy body armour. This situation continued into the 360s, when representational evidence indicates that the cuirass was adopted again. This change may be associated with new battlefield tactics introduced by the Theban general Epaminondas.

The Immortal/Warlord plastic Spartans are smaller and slighter figures but have greater variety with both armoured and unarmoured types, some in exomis tunic. I'll be using using a mix of all plastic and most metal ranges for my Greek city state armies and these Victrix figures are one of the nicest hoplite ranges around.
