Aventine Italian Cavalry

Here are a few photos of a small unit of Aventine Italian cavalry that I've just finished. The photos below show another unit from the same range for comparison and both units combined as a single unit. These are fantastic detailed figures that are easy to paint and are really versatile - they can be used as various Italian allies for a Republican Roman army, as Tarentine cavalry and I will probably even field them as Samnite cavalry for my Samnite army.

Republican Romans versus Gauls

View of the table - Romans on the left, Gauls on the right

Republican Romans hold the line

Last Sunday at the Vikings Club in Lanyon, Garry and I played a Hail Caesar game, with Republican Romans versus Gauls. Here are a few photos of the game, unfortunately most of the photos I took during the game didn't turn out. In the end it was a draw but the Romans were in a pretty bad way with every unit remaining on the table shaken! Thanks to Garry for a fun game.

Early Successor Elephants

Here are a few photos of two Early Successor elephants that I've just finished painting. The figures are by Gripping Beast from their Polemarch Successor range. The elephants are resin while the crew are metal. There are not too many companies who actually do an early successor elephant with mahout and pikeman astride and both the crew and nellie are excellent figures. See my earlier post on Early Successor Elephants to compare the Essex and Tin Soldier elephants and crew.

Victrix Mercenary Armoured and Greek Unarmoured Hoplites

A guest post this week by Garry aka Mithridates who emailed me these photos, starting at the top with his Victrix mercenary armoured hoplites with metal command (Essex leader and Warlord musician). Second unit down are Victrix unarmoured hoplites with metal command (Relic leader and Warlord musician). Below is a composite hoplite phalanx with Essex, Aventine, Black Tree, Gorgon, Victrix, Relic, Warlord and Naismith(?) figures. The final photo shows a stand of Victrix armoured hoplites on the left, with a stand of the unarmoured hoplites on the right. The shields have a mix of LBM transfers and Battle Flag water slide transfers.
