Spartan Command

Here are some photos of three command stands for my Spartan Army. The figures are mainly Foundry with two by Gorgon Studios and a single Xyston 28mm figure. The close up shots were taken with a macro lens and while this is great for detail it also tends to emphasise any slight mistakes or sloppiness in the painting!

I recently received my copy of Dacia The Roman Wars Volume 1 Sarmizegetusa by Radu Oltean. This is  a superb book, lavishly illustrated and painstakingly researched, it is definitely worth getting if you're at all interested in Rome's Dacian Wars. It is available from Karawansaray Publishers.

Victrix Greek Peltasts

Here are a couple of photos some Victrix Greek Peltasts which I've just finished painting and basing. Some of these saw action in our Battle of Mantinea refight last weekend. Craig had painted up a unit of these as well and we both made the same mistake of gluing the shields with rims on the outside instead of the inside. The LBM peltast shield transfers don't fit if you do this! So I've just painted most of them with hide shields but still have another 32 from the box to do with the transfers. The archers in the photos below are a mix of Gorgon Studios Spartan archers and Foundry Greek archers.

Mantinean peltasts take on Spartan cavalry

Here are some photos from our refight of the Battle of Mantinea 418 BC, last Sunday at the Vikings Club in Lanyon. Bern, Gary and Josh commanded the Spartans and allies, while Garry, Craig and I commanded the Athenians, Mantineans, Argives and allies. Expecting to get steamrolled by the elite Spartan hoplites, we held  back with the Argives in the centre and the Mantineans and allies on the right. Part of the scenario Craig had devised for the game was the possible arrival of Athenian reinforcements from turn four on a roll of 5+.

The Spartans and allies were hampered by King Agis' poor leadership who only rated a 7 with no rerolls. Needless to say his division took some time to get in contact and the Athenian reinforcements did arrive but only once the game had been decided. On the left flank the Athenians quickly got stuck in and sent the Spartan cavalry on that flank scurrying towards Pelagos Wood to their rear. On the right flank a protracted struggle between Craig and Josh ensued which eventually saw the Brasideans and Sciritae break the Mantinean and Arcadian allies.

In the centre the Spartans advanced slowly but the Argives were able to charge home and, with luck, were able to break a Spartan hoplite unit in the first round of combat. A typical phalanx grinding matched commenced with results of two or less considered a draw because of the phalanx special rule in Hail Caesar. Meanwhile the Athenians on the left flank were able to exploit their initial success and broke the Spartans and Tegeans there. Eventually the Spartans in the centre also broke just as the Athenian reinforcements made a rather poorly timed entrance onto the tabletop! Thanks to Bern, Gary, Josh, Garry and Craig for another fun game.

Greek Peltasts, Javelinmen and Slingers

Here are a few photos of some Greek peltasts, javelinmen and slingers that I've just finished painting. The peltasts are mainly Foundry figures with a few Gorgon Studios Spartan javelinmen.  The water slide shield transfers are a mix of VVV, Foundry and Warlord. The javelinmen are Foundry and Old Glory figures while the slingers are Victrix and come as part of the plastic Greek Peltasts, Javelinmen and Slingers box set.
