Last Sunday Garry, Bern and I met at the Vikings Club for a game of Command and Colors Ancients, playing a scenario for the Battle of Cunaxa. Garry was the Persian king, Artaxerxes, Bern was the satrap, Tissaphernes commanding the left flank and I was the rebel Cyrus in the centre with the 10,000 mercenary Greek Hoplites under Clearchus on my right flank, next to the river Euphrates. The Greek Hoplites weren't particularly effective in our game, unlike in the original battle.

This proved to be an exciting and closely fought affair which went right down to the wire. Cyrus was killed midway in the battle and then Aratxerxes met the same fate himself! After suffering early casualties the rebel side clawed their way back into the game through some fortuitous command cards and lucky dice rolling. In the end Artaxerxes’s side was just pipped at the post with 8 to 7 victory banners. Thanks to Garry and Bern for a cracking game.

    1. Thanks Simon, the Persians are very colourful. Garry has some nicely painted Battlestandard Persians that look great with LBM shield transfers.

  2. Splendid and colored armies, the attack of the chariot and cavalry vs the hoplites should have been a great moment!

    1. Thanks Phil, the hoplites didn't do as well as expected but did manage to account for some of the chariots and cavalry.

What do you use for the large hex mat?

    1. Thanks Jonathan, the mat was a Hotz desert mat with 5 inch hexes. It took 6 months from when I ordered it!
